8th-grade ELA students learn literary elements as they relate to nonfiction, in alignment with Common Core State Standards. We use Elie Weisel’s Night as our model text. This lesson unit could easily be adapted for 7th through 12th-grade, and has cross-curricular potential in the higher grades (when the 20th century and the Holocaust are taught in History/Social Studies). Be warned that the content of Night is intense and may not be suitable for all students, particularly on the lower end of the 7th–12th grade spectrum.
