About This Lesson

This lesson is dark. It has students look at the reasons for lynching and how Blacks were treated after Reconstruction ended. The lesson plan is clear, but it uses a lot of scholarship. Sundown Towns, Convict Lease laws, and the correlation between lynchings and cotton prices. It also uses a very graphic slideshow while Strange Fruit is playing. I also use the Stevie Wonder song "They Won't Go When I Go" after Strange Fruit, so that The two songs, Strange Fruit and They Won't Go When I Go are playing during the slide show.

Note: Power Point contains graphic images, please view prior to use in the classroom -SML

Awesome lesson plan. It propels the students to think and it urges them not to forget the past so that it will not become their present. It evoked feelings and thoughts that they were not familiar with.
