About This Lesson

Mock Lesson Plan for the Breakdown of Plays

Grade Level: 8th grade

Topic: What is needed in a play that adds to its complexity.

Materials Needed:

  • Selected reading (chosen from the list handed out previously in class before the weekend)
  • Vocabulary list given to students on Monday after discussing what plays they have chosen (example included)
  • Computer access for author/background research
  • Student Activity Discussion sheet

Objective:

To encourage students to look in depth at the way a screenplay is written and what makes it special versus other plays. Determine what makes a screenplay unique from other forms of literature.

Activity/Plan (Two Week Schedule):

Daily: Each day we will discuss in two groups: one will be students reading the same play while the second will be a mix of students reading different plays. Each type of group will have a different question they will talk about among themselves and make notes about the other screenplays that the students aren't reading before discussing as a class. Discuss and identify any new vocabulary from previous reading assignment. If a project has been assignment, allow 20 minutes at the end of class to work on projects and ask questions to the instructor.

Standards

Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise.
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place; how it sets a formal or informal tone).
Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.
