This is the 4th lesson of an 8 lesson unit. Students will learn to use common denominators to solve addition and subtraction word problems that include fractions and mixed numbers. The lesson is introduced via a PPT presentation. The Power Point presentation includes notes to guide the lesson. The presentation is paused intermittently to enable student pairs or groups to practice solving problems using common denominators or finding common denominators. Aligned to CCSS: 5.NF.1, 5.NF.2

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators.
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers.
