About This Lesson
This poem; written by children's author Roger Hurn; takes old sayings and proverbs as its source material but then asks why we should accept this conventional ‘wisdom’. However; the most powerful verse is the last one in which the well-worn aphorism about sticks and stones is challenged. This resource also contains comprehensive notes on how to develop the poem with the children.
There is an enormous amount of thought-provoking and discussion based material here which is an unusual, fun, interactive way to get older children to study words and their effect. Incredible how many proverbs Roger has managed to put together in one poem, and rhyming too. It would be a challenge not to find something you could use amongst the list of suggestions and ideas following the poem! I will be the 'Call my Bluff' game with the teenagers at the youth group I run. Thanks Roger
