The Number System Two Week Plan

About This Lesson

This two week 7th grade math lesson plan will focus on the Number System and Operations with Rational Numbers. In activity 4, students first learn to classify subsets of the rational numbers. Then they extend their understanding of operations with integers to positive and negative rational numbers. The key teaching strategy for this unit will focus on standard for mathematical practice #1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. We will have classroom discussions to compare and contrast sample performance tasks to the embedded assessments so that student can see how embedded assessments will prepare them for spring testing. Student will use the Springboard textbook to solve many challenging problems from their classwork and homework that will prepare them for the Embedded Assessment 2, which is at the end of Activity 4. Each lesson will follow a similar agenda; Do Now, Notes, Clickers, Classwork and Exit ticket. Materials students will need are, Pencil, Interactive Notebook, Springboard Textbook, a planner to write down homework, and laptop computers for students who finish early and the Desmos activity every student will need to complete on Friday.

Standards

Convert a rational number to a decimal using long division; know that the decimal form of a rational number terminates in 0s or eventually repeats.
Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract rational numbers.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide rational numbers.
Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies.
Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation.
Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.
