Oedipus opens the Free Will/Destiny Unit; which centers around this question--Are our lives governed by Free Will or Destiny? Students not only grapple with the question;but they also present their assertion/argument on the topic. Ultimately; they determine whether the play supports or refutes the assertions at which they've arrived. The combination of literary analysis of structure and irony; coupled with a purpose for reading (arguing their ideas on the question) has proven successful in my 9th grade classes. Oedipus has that "icky" factor Freshmen LOVE. Enjoy!
