About This Lesson
On May 28, 2018 an eruption of the Big Island of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano spewed forth a 2,000-foot ash plume into the air that fell to the earth as fine ash. The town of Pahala – 544 acres remotely nestled in the southeastern countryside of the island in the Ka’u District and not in danger of being destroyed by a lava flow – made the local news that day when volcanic ash settled on this small community bringing with it hazardous health and safety issues to the people there. Teams will research the health hazards involved and produce a brochure and instructional video on the safety equipment and procedures needed to protect the Pahala students from these threats.
