About This Lesson

Why the Ground Moves — Plate Tectonics and the Ring of Fire

Topic: Plate tectonics as the engine behind earthquakes and volcanoes. Hook: the same map plotted three ways — earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain ranges — and they all draw the SAME lines. Why? Students work from evidence to the theory, the way Wegener had to.

Target learning outcomes — by the end, students can: 
- Read a world earthquake map and predict where the plate boundaries run 
- Model the three boundary types with their hands and name what each builds or destroys 
- Explain why Egypt rarely has big earthquakes but Japan does

Audience: Grades 6–8 (ages 11–13), 28 students. Geography is often seen as "the boring subject" here — this lesson has to fight that.

School context: Standard classroom, projector available, no lab. Graham-cracker-and-frosting style models are possible if cheap. 
Constraints: One 45-minute in-person lesson, ending with a written "explain the map" check I can mark fast.
