In The Received Wisdom, a discussion and interview podcast about how to realize the potential of science and technology, Professors Shobita Parthasarathy (University of Michigan) and Jack Stilgoe (University College London) talk to thinkers and doers from around the world about governing science and technology to make the world a better place. The show seamlessly weaves academic concepts together with important, timely, and globally relevant issues, making it appropriate and engaging for students from high school through graduate school. Jack and Shobita bring their deep expertise in the field and their instincts from teaching in their own classrooms to interviews with a diverse group of leading figures.
Each episode includes a discussion of recent news in science and technology and then a deep dive with a guest on big topics ranging from COVID to climate change and algorithms to self-driving cars, focusing heavily on questions about equity and the impact of technology. The show encourages students to develop an analytic approach to thinking about technology by asking big questions like, are robots racist? Have people stopped trusting experts? Does scientific research increase global inequality?
Each episode also includes a resource guide of the texts and articles mentioned in the show and a set of study questions for classrooms like, “What are the social and political implications of focusing on ‘competitiveness’ as the main goal of science and technology policy?”
