About This Lesson

This activity is designed for students to identify the elements of argument used by Fireside Poet James Russell Lowell in "Stanzas on Freedom." Students are to use the TPCASTT strategy to first analyze the poem for meaning and understanding and then demonstrate comprehension through analysis using evidence from the text. The students then write a paragraph that relates to the lesson's essential question of the effect Fireside Poets were able to have on the expansion of thought as it related to the question of freedom from slavery. CCSS alignment: RL.11-12.1
