About This Lesson

Focusing on poetry is critically important for students in the 9th grade. Poems pack a tremendous amount of meaning into small packages, and during the next few weeks, you will inspire your scholars to be expert close readers and lovers of poetry. You will see their facility to make meaning in the genre of poetry vastly increase. It is a perfect end of year unit because it allows students to apply knowledge they have gained throughout the year about theme, figurative language, and close reading. Critically reading poetry also aligns to the Common Core Standards, which explains that by the end of 9th grade, students should be familiar with how to closely read, comprehend, and analyze texts of all genres, including poetry. Additionally, teaching a poetry survey course allows students to become familiarized with world literature and allows them to consider other point of views.
