About This Lesson

This unit is designed for 8th grade ELA students. Over the course of two weeks, students will explore, analyze, discuss, and create various types of poetry with a focus on the way we are able to use the format to protest or object to something in the world around us. The unit will culminate with students presenting original spoken word to their peers and the community. Our school schedule has regular 45-minute periods on Mondays and Tuesdays, compact 30-minute periods on Wednesdays, and extended 90-minute block periods on Thursdays and Fridays. We see each group of students Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays and only see half of the groups on Thursdays and the other half of the groups on Fridays.
