About This Lesson
Defining Democracy, Autocracy, Oligarchy, Socialism, Capitalism, and Mixed Economy.
Purpose is to confront the propagandistic use of political terms to scare people rather than to engage in constructive civic discourse.
Approach is that democracy & autocracy are ideals on opposite sides of a political spectrum. Socialism and capitalism are ideals on opposite ends of an economic spectrum. All systems in the real world are actually oligarchies and are mixed economies.
The two spectra are made into a Cartesian grid, and the students are asked, via a Values Line method, to determine where they believe the U.S. is on the grid.
Plan comes with complete lesson plan, complete accompanying Power Point, link to accompanying video in the plan, and complete list of standards from each State so that you can simply search your State and copy/paste the appropriate State standards into your version of the plan.
I'm making this one available for free on every platform I can find because this I believe it's vital that we get rid of the ridiculously ideological use of political and economic labels used for politician's campaigning - it stands in the way of our society moving forward.
If you like it, let me know, and if you have other ideas or desires for similarly constructed lesson plans, please contact me. I can't promise to make them for free, but we can certainly talk. [email protected]
