POV: Why Students are Failing - An Oversight
Mr. O's new series "Teacher Techniques" opens with an oversight hiding in plain sight: students aren't failing because the material is too hard — they're failing because they can't read it. When a student stares at a textbook passage or a set of test instructions and doesn't know what "analyze," "infer," "determine," or "cite evidence" actually mean, the assignment is over before it starts. It isn't a motivation problem or an ability problem. It's a vocabulary gap sitting between the student and every question on the page.
Mr. O, the hip hop teacher, breaks down the fix: pre-teach the language before you teach the lesson. Front-load the academic and directional vocabulary — the command words, the content terms, the phrasing students will meet on the test — and model them in plain talk students recognize. Say it, show it, let them say it back. Then deliver the lesson. Because if the words aren't unlocked first, students stay stuck, and the grade tells a story that has nothing to do with what they actually know.
