About This Lesson
The following two-week unit plan was designed to be used in a 10th grade, co-taught English class but can be modified for use in an ELA classroom. It falls in the middle of a study of Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird. This mini-unit focuses on the Tom Robinson trial and the racism present in the characters and community. It also incorporates a short project-based assignment where students will work in groups to research and create presentations highlighting current issues of racism and solutions. This unit really places the student at the center of learning by providing parameters and allowing students to steer the activity.
