The topic for this unit plan of instruction will be Racial Hierarchy in the United States  geared for a mixture of 10th and 11th grade students. Students will learn different reading comprehension strategies that will assist them in understanding what they are reading. Students will also use these strategies to produce a quality expository essay on the book “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness” by Michelle Alexander. This unit plan will cover a span of two and a half weeks and about 12 hour long sessions.

Students will be able to demonstrate literal and inferential comprehension of the book,“The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness” by Michelle Alexander, through participation in discussion and writing activities.
