About This Lesson

As part of 6+1 Trait Writing, students are asked to vary the length and structure of their sentences. I use this handout for my 6-8th grade writers to help them discover their personal sentence structure. After teaching the handout's content, I ask students to practice writing the four different sentence structure types. I also ask students to analyze their own sentence structure. Students quickly discover what types of sentences typify their writing style. Although this task can be difficult, students like it because it involves self-discovery and direct application to their own writing.
