Teaching the New Colossus: Poetry, Student Voice, and American Identity

Annie Polland, Executive Director of the Tenement Museum, offers a way to reimagine Emma Lazarus's landmark poem, The New Colossus (The poem most famously associated with the Statue of Liberty) as a way to deepen student understanding of immigration and American identity as well as an opportunity to create their own civic poetry.
