About This Lesson

This Is What Democracy Looks Like is a new graphic novel from the Center for Cartoon Studies, which started out as a Kickstarter project. You can download a free copy of the comic book, along with some teachers resources, from their website.

The book is great. It's a short, visual introduction to American government and politics. It's a perfect way to engage your students who have trouble or dislike reading. The graphic novel also gets into the idea of civic engagement, so it's not just a "three branches of government" kind of thing.

This is an excellent resource to use as an introductory activity before engaging in Project Based Learning. It could also feature as part of a unit on the drafting and ratifying of the Constitution. Or it could be used as a foundational text at the beginning of the school year to frame your social studies class around civics and government.

You'll find a link to where you can download the book and the teacher resources in the resources section below.
