About This Lesson
Students work through misconceptions they have about what a scientist looks like, what they do, and how they are related to the scientific process. This lesson gives examples of working in cultural context and connections using Native American scientists but can be modified to incorporate many other ethnicities based on your classroom.
I refer to Native Americans - Mary Golda Ross (Cherokee), Thomas David Petite (Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa), Corey Ashley (Navajo). And I let students know that scientists are not limited by race, gender, or other barriers. Scientists are created through imagination and inquiry. Science is created by many people and their different background, experiences, and perceptions of individually work collaboratively. How does an individual’s unique perspective help to solve a problem?
