About This Lesson

The unit plan I designed is for an 11-12th grade English Language Arts classroom; ideally 50-55 minutes per session. The unit plan briefly covers the Harlem Renaissance, with a greater emphasis on the writer Langston Hughes. Over the course of this unit, students are required to read and analyses poems written by Hughes, while examining cultural matters, experienced by the African American community; that give life to cultural awakening the 1920’s. The objective is to gather background knowledge, and evidence from Hughes' poems to assist with conducting a formal analysis at the end of the unit.

While engaged in this unit plan, students will take part in a number of activities that require them to discuss and comprehend complex and sensitive topics such as race, prejudice, cultural difference, socioeconomic class, taboo customs and tradition, oppression, etc. My intentions are to strengthen our classroom communication, aid with comprehension of ethnic differences, and build a socially responsible group of students how are able to work successfully in changing social climates by viewing cultural matters from multiple perspectives.
