About This Lesson

What are human rights and how can young people defend and promote human rights through writing? This lesson is designed to help students answer these questions by exploring human rights journalism. The activities in this lesson plan can be used to prepare students to enter the Young Human Rights Reporter Competition, an annual competition to find the best young human rights reporters in the UK. Aligned to Common Core State Standards: RH.6-8.1, RH.6-8.2, RH.6-8.3, RH.6-8.4, RH.6-8.6

Although the lesson is centered around the writing and submission of a writing piece on UK human rights, "Young Human Rights Reporter Competition", the information in the lesson and the activities, including student essays, can be adapted for an informational lesson on human rights. Student examples can serve to support modeled writing.
