I currently teach and am a lead practitioner/ dept lead for maths across 2 Birmingham schools. I work largely developing resources encouraging independent and applied learning in mathematics. This includes writing and implementing entire schemes of work based entirely on functional, mathematical thinking. This SoW begins in year 7 and involves students learning through the use of extended pieces of work lasting up to 12 hours. Each task allows students to explore mathematics and not simply be given a rule to learn. To continue the investigations, students are required to learn new things and as such, cover the National Curriculum. Furthermore, students get used to working, thinking and writing mathematically.
