Digital Play for Global Citizens

Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop

In this publication from the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop and the Center for Global Education at Asia Society, Cooney Center Senior Fellow Jordan Shapiro leads educators, youth development leaders, and parents through a vast landscape of digital resources – some of which may already be familiar tools – and suggests some innovative ways to nurture our young learners into macro-minded citizens. With the guidance of the adults around them, Digital Play for Global Citizens highlights some ways that children can use digital tools to engage more deeply with the ideas that will help prepare them to thrive in a world of unforeseen challenges.

Divided into three parts, Digital Play for Global Citizens introduces digital websites, games, and tools to:

  • help students build awareness of themselves and the world around them,
  • recognize and investigate the history, as well as the complex, systemic causes of contemporary issues ranging from economic inequality to global conflict to cultural diversity and inclusion, and
  • use digital play to explore the natural world.

From exploring boundaries, borders, and geography; to developing empathy and understanding of diversity; to developing a sense of curiosity and wonder about nature; this guide introduces practical, ready-to-use resources and techniques for using digital play to promote global citizenship.
