About This Lesson

This 50-minute lesson introduces quadratic functions and their graphs. Students learn the standard form y = ax^2 + bx + c and the vertex form y = a(x - h)^2 + k, identify parabolas, and analyze key features including the vertex, axis of symmetry, and intercepts. Worked examples build tables of values, graph a basic parabola, shift and stretch a parabola, and model the height of a thrown ball. The lesson plan includes objectives, prerequisite skills, key vocabulary with definition cards and short definition videos, three warm-up activities (algebra tiles, areas of rectangles with variable dimensions, and graphing in Desmos), a captioned tutorial video, a review with two more examples, a 10-question quiz, and an answer key. Aligned to CCSS HSF.IF.B.4 and HSF.IF.B.5. Free from Media4Math; no login required.

Standards

For a function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key features of graphs and tables in terms of the quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features given a verbal description of the relationship.
Relate the domain of a function to its graph and, where applicable, to the quantitative relationship it describes.
