About This Lesson

This lesson introduces middle school students to linear equations and how to represent them with tables, graphs, and equations. Students learn the components of a linear equation (variables, coefficients, constants), the meaning of slope and y-intercept, how standard form relates to slope-intercept form, and how to tell linear from nonlinear equations. Worked examples model real-world situations such as car rental costs, fuel remaining on a trip, hourly earnings, and a cellphone data plan. The lesson plan includes objectives, prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, two warm-up activities, a teaching sequence with slide shows and Desmos activities, five worked examples, a review slide show, a 10-question quiz, and an answer key. Aligned to CCSS 8.EE.B.5 and 8.EE.C.7. About 30 minutes. Free from Media4Math; no login required.
