About This Lesson
This lesson can be taught during an ocean, water, matter, carbon cycle, ecosystem, or human impacts unit. Students conduct a hands-on investigation that models the interaction between Earth's atmosphere and ocean. During the experiment, students observe what happens when carbon dioxide (CO2) gas enters water containing an acid-base indicator. A color change allows students to see evidence that carbon dioxide can change the chemistry and pH of water. This activity is especially useful when introducing students to ocean acidification because it allows them to observe a
small-scale model of a process occurring between Earth's atmosphere and ocean. Teacher supervision is required for this investigation. Students should wear safety goggles while conducting or observing the experiment.
