About This Lesson

538-0 is a free, browser-based presidential election game that puts more than 450 figures from American history on the table — presidents and abolitionists, inventors and generals, reformers and names students already know. Students build a ticket, run a campaign, and watch a real electoral-college map fill in state by state.

The map does the civics teaching: students see immediately that states elect presidents, not people, and that a candidate can sweep 538–0 or lose the same way. The cards do the history teaching: every figure carries a short factual biography, and the ones students have never heard of are the ones they go look up.

Six printable activities are included, each with a student handout:

  • Meet Your Ticket (research/writing, solo, 1 class + homework) — students profile the president and VP they drew, using a real source
  • Why It Worked (discussion/civics, small groups, 1 class) — track which coalitions held and which collapsed, then bridge to real majority-building
  • Roster Jeopardy (review game, whole class, 30–45 min) — quiz-show review of the figures students encountered
  • Read the Map (geography/data, solo or pairs, 1 class) — compare electoral maps and hunt for regional patterns and swing states
  • Dream Ticket Draft (history/debate, teams, 1–2 classes) — draft and defend a two-person ticket from a single era
  • Spot the Tactic (media literacy, pairs, 1 class + research) — match in-game persuasion tactics to real campaign examples

Logistics: Free. No account, no student login, nothing to install — runs in any browser, including Chromebooks and phones. Each game produces a shareable link and map students can drop into a slide or document.

Please preview first. Built for ages 13+. Campaign-strategy cards include satirically framed tactics like attack ads and opposition research — nothing graphic, sexual, or profane, but the tone is knowing rather than strictly G-rated. Real political figures appear, including living ones; the game deliberately spans the spectrum, takes no side, and does not rate anyone's honesty or character. All stats are invented for gameplay.
