About This Lesson
This lesson plan/activity has the teacher introduce strict new rules to the class. Students then write speeches of protest. Before giving their speeches, the teacher censors part of it. Students will understand the concept of censorship, and then why the Alien and Sedition acts were so intrusive. Finishes with an assignment about a more modern day example of censorship: Wamsutta (Frank B.) James’ suppressed speech on the 350th Anniversary of the Pilgrim’s Landing at Plymouth Rock (September 10, 1970).
