About This Lesson

Even before the wreckage was cleared from the World Trade Center, questions about what would become of this site began to be asked by many. After much contemplation and discussion, the decision was made to rebuild the site to include both new skyscrapers as well as a memorial. Use this lesson plan to explore the question: Can a memorial to a tragic event serve as both a public space and a place of remembrance?

In this lesson, students will:

  • Be introduced to the design of the 9/11 Memorial.
  • Explore the range of reactions and behaviors on the 9/11 Memorial plaza.
  • Consider the dual function of the 9/11 Memorial to serve as both a public space and a place of remembrance.

Lesson plans include interactive images, videos, and links, that are best viewed directly from our website using the link in the resources tab.
