About This Lesson
This is a teacher's guide to Baseball Saved Us by Ken Mochizuki's. Shorty and his family, along with thousands of Japanese Americans, are sent to an internment camp after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Fighting the heat and dust of the desert, Shorty and his father decide to build a baseball diamond and form a league in order to boost the spirits of the internees. The educator's guide includes a book summary, background, discussion questions, vocabulary, reader-response and other writing prompts, ELL support, and interdisciplinary activities.
The video contains a short introduction on George Takei's experience as a child in an internment camp and follows with a reading of the book.
