About This Lesson
Resource: Nautical network
Description
Media (6 mins): Learn about migratory species in this video where a team of marine biologists recover a receiver that has been collecting data on scalloped hammerhead sharks. Key Concepts: Environmental monitoring, scientific inquiry
- See the media: Ocean School makes media/activity combinations. Each piece of media is linked to an activity. You can access this video by visiting the Ocean School website or by visiting the direct link here. If you like this media, you can see all of the available resources in the Ocean School Resource Catalogue. Everything in Ocean School is provided free to the public.
Activity (75 mins): Students learn a few facts about blacktip sharks and hammerhead sharks and then use Google Earth and a real-life shark tracking data set to compare the movement of two sharks.
- Your student will need KML files to complete this activity (exciting!), get the files from the National Film Board here: KML Files for Google Earth. The activity includes instructions about how to set up and work with the KML files. Thank you to Dr. Alex Hearn, the scientist that provided the shark tracking KML files to Ocean School.
- Want a Google Slides version? We offer a Google Slides version of the activity, a Microsoft Powerpoint version of the activity, and a PDF version of the activity on the Ocean School website. If you like this resource, note that there is an Ocean School Resource Catalogue. Everything in Ocean School is provided free to the public, is ad-free, and requires no login for teacher or student.
About Ocean School
