About This Lesson

This flier promoting the women's suffrage amendment was published by the Empire State Campaign Committee in advance of the 1915 women's suffrage referendum in New York. It contains a cartoon depicting a "Suffragist" standing at a chalkboard quizzing an "Anti-Suffragist." The question written on the blackboard is "How can this be a 'government of the people and by the people' if-only 1/2 of the people vote?" The referendum was defeated in 1915 but passed two years later in November 1917.
