The Great Irish Hunger of 1845-1852 remains one of the most lethal famines in modern world history. It changed the subsequent development of Ireland, but it’s repercussions, largely as a consequence of mass emigration, were felt elsewhere. Although Ireland’s Great Hunger occurred over 170 years ago, the lessons it teaches us about hunger, poverty, dislocation and forced emigration remain relevant today and underpin enduring questions regarding social justice and human rights.
