About This Lesson
Students will learn about two pelican species commonly seen in Texas: the Brown Pelican and the American White Pelican.
Both are large waterbirds with long bills, expandable throat pouches, webbed feet, and broad wings, but they differ in
appearance, feeding behavior, and seasonal movements.
Brown Pelicans are closely associated with the Texas coast and nest on coastal islands. American White Pelicans are
frequently seen in Texas during migration and winter and may occur in both coastal and inland aquatic habitats. Texas
provides important habitat for both species.
Students will compare the two species and create a three-dimensional craft model of each pelican using paper plates,
cardboard tubes, and paper.
