About This Lesson

Recognizing and celebrating our differences permits people of all backgrounds to understand more about ourselves and how we see and connect with others. This collection of Diversity & Inclusion books and reading guides will help you teach key skills to your students so they can thrive in our diverse world.

Two key themes in the book, Lend a Hand: Poems about Giving are Helping Others and Empathy. The characters in this book are from diverse backgrounds and take an opportunity to show kindness to people around them, who are often different from them – in age, gender, ethnicity, etc. The characters generously share their resources, encouragement and compassion and as a result, experience the joy of giving. Because their actions are inclusive and welcoming to others, the characters create a sense of belonging and community. This book shows that when we recognize the humanity in others, and offer help when we can, everyone benefits.

Empathy is the ability to see the world through someone else’s eyes and share their perspective. In each poem, the characters show compassion toward another person’s situation or circumstance. As you read this book, use the tips included to guide your discussion, and make this story come to life!
