About This Lesson

What can a stem, a shape, or a splash of color tell us? In this 40-minute unplugged lesson, first graders become pattern detectives. They use picture clues to notice familiar patterns, then explore how machines learn from examples people give them, and why machines sometimes guess wrong. No devices or AI accounts are needed. Includes a slide deck, the Pattern Detectives worksheet, and optional vocabulary cards. This is Lesson 1 of Day of AI's free Grade 1 unit, Learning from Patterns, developed with MIT RAISE. Explore the full PreK–12 curriculum at dayofai.org.
