About This Lesson

Students will perform four tasks in order to analyze and compare the diversity level of land plots. Students will first, collect and record data from a field investigation using direct observation and tally marks. Second, students will graph data collected on a line plot. Next, students will analyze and interpret their results. Finally, students will evaluate results, compare their findings to other students’ results and make conclusions based on their findings. Students can perform the 4 tasks during separate class periods or can conduct all tasks during an extended science/math block.

Note: This performance task is an extension to the unit, Backyard Bio Blast, by Katie Baird, a unit based off of materials from the Association of Fish and Wildlife.

Standards

Collect, record, interpret, represent, and describe data in a table, graph or line plot.
Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.
develop an understanding of the structure, function, behavior, development, life cycles, and diversity of living organisms; and
Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.
Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.
