About This Lesson

November 15 is America Recycles Day, a great time to engage your class in learning about the importance of reducing waste and making more sustainable choices. Turn this opportunity into a teachable moment with lessons that put those choices directly in students’ hands. Students learn why paper is one of the most recycled resources on the planet, the recycling process, and how recycling paper and cardboard products helps protect the environment, with standards-aligned activities designed to build critical thinking, research, and math skills. Spanish version of activites and take home are available.

Visit PROGRAM SITE for Spanish materials, curriculum alignment and other resources.

Made possible by Paper and Packaging Board.

Standards

Obtain and combine information to describe that energy and fuels are derived from natural resources and that their uses affect the environment.
Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on humans.
Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.
Gather and make sense of information to describe that synthetic materials come from natural resources and impact society.
Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment.
Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual model.
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Relate volume to the operations of multiplication and addition and solve real world and mathematical problems involving volume.
Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.
Recognize a statistical question as one that anticipates variability in the data related to the question and accounts for it in the answers.
Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots.
Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or subject area.
Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.
Integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.
Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.
Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area.
Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently.
Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.
Distinguish among facts, reasoned judgment based on research findings, and speculation in a text.
