The River Valley Civilizations Comparison is a pretty basic activity for students to jigsaw. Each student reads about a different river valley civilization (Mesopotamia/Sumer, Egypt, China, and Mohenjo daro/Harappa). While reading, they annotate about elements of civilizations (cities, government, economy/trade, organized religion, specialized jobs, writing, infrastructure, social classes). Then they all regroup and share out their notes on each element of civilizations with their group, who actively listens and fills in the appropriate column on the chart. The Egypt reading is the hardest.
