This lesson focuses on the role the Statue of Liberty has played in US history and in the hearts and minds of Americans and the world. The lesson begins by helping students to define liberty and then to understand how a concept can be embodied or personified in a statue. Students study "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus in which the Statue of Liberty "speaks" to us.
