About This Lesson
This resource on changemakers is an interdisciplinary reading, writing, and social studies unit designed for 5th graders. It introduces students to key leaders and ideas from the Women's Suffrage, Civil Rights, and Workers' Rights movements. Students read multiple informational texts on each movement and synthesize main themes in writing. This unit culminates in a written test which requires students to apply their non-fiction reading skills to a different text, and an applied expository writing project, in which students explain a problem in their community and propose a solution that they could carry out.
