The AFT has prepared sample parent letters on selected mathematics topics for grades K-8. Available in English and Spanish, the aim is to help parents better understand some of the new language in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and strategies they may see their children use on their journey to achieving the understanding and skills required by CCSS. New letters will be added throughout the year. You can personalize these letters with your school name, logo and signature and send to parents or post on your school's website. Aligned with Common Core Standard: 5.NF.4, 5.NF.7b

I'm very glad to see the rich involvement of AFT in the CCSS effort. Modeling professional collaboration toward strengthening the education system is fantastic. After 16 years as a mathematics and science teacher (and an AFT member), another 15 as a math/sci curriculum director, and the past 10 as the STEM Education Program manager for a large PBS affiliate, it is great to see what our professionals can accomplish when they pull up on their bootstraps and share their expertise with others.
