About This Lesson

This lesson presents an engaging way to teach students how whales communicate with echolocation. The lesson features a fun group activity about echolocation, which includes math components about calculating distance and map-making. You can hold this activity in the classroom, the school gymnasium, or even outdoors! The whale fact sheet highlights migration, classifications of whales, and more; it includes an ELA lesson on boosting basic reading skills and reading for information.

These resources are enhanced by a viewing of the film Whale Rider, but also work as a stand alone resource. The lesson could also be paired with excerpts from The Whale Rider book by Witi Ihimaera.
