About This Lesson

To be an effective classroom manager, you need to get off to a good start on the first day of school:

  • Be prepared, organized and in charge
  • Create a sense of comfort and order for student
  • Establish your leadership role

Start the Day

  • Greet your students at the door
  • Direct students to take their seats
  • Use name tags as needed for younger students
  • Conduct an activity to introduce students to one another

During the Day

  • Carefully explain the rules and procedures
  • Present only procedure that are needed
  • Keep the whole class focused
  • Plan for maximum interaction with the entire class

First Day Tips

  • Establish yourself as the leader of the class
  • Stay with your class as much as possible
  • Invite visitors into the classroom or schedule a visit for another time
  • Move around the classroom and interact with students
  • Plan an engaging introductory lesson
  • Have students introduce themselves
  • Learn students’ names
