Constitution Day Activities and Lesson Plans

At the heart of our democracy lies a document that not only delineates the structure of the government but also guarantees the fundamental rights and liberties of its citizens—the U.S. Constitution. As we commemorate Constitution Day, an event that honors the adoption of this pivotal document on Sept. 17, 1787, we are reminded of its unwavering significance in shaping our nation's history and identity. The resources in this collection are designed to empower educators in shaping a new generation of informed and engaged participants in our democratic society by using resources and lesson plans curated to underscore the significance of the Constitution; the need for active citizenship; and the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Understanding the Constitution: These resources provide educators with a comprehensive understanding of the document’s origins, its key principles, and the subsequent amendments that have shaped our nation's journey toward a more inclusive and just society. Students will explore the intricate balance of power among the three branches of government, the significance of the Bill of Rights, and the historical context behind each article and clause.

Promoting Active Citizenship: Teaching about the Constitution is crucial for promoting active and informed citizenship. It serves as the bedrock of our democracy; and understanding its principles, rights, and processes provides citizens with the foundational knowledge they need to navigate and participate effectively in their civic responsibilities. Resources in this collection will help educators foster respectful discussions inside and outside the classroom, as well as ways to get students excited about being civically engaged.

Nurturing Diversity and Equity: Inclusivity lies at the heart of a flourishing democracy. Celebrate Constitution Day by emphasizing the significance of diversity, equity and inclusion in our nation's narrative. By integrating discussions on constitutional rights and equal protection under the law, students will explore the struggles and achievements of marginalized communities, recognizing the value of inclusivity in safeguarding democracy’s future.

This compilation of resources, ideas and guidance for educators spans all grade levels, from kindergartners experiencing their first brush with the concept of democracy to high school seniors ready to shoulder the responsibility of active citizenship. So, as we celebrate Constitution Day, let’s take this opportunity to teach our students the rich history of our constitutional heritage and their own important role in ensuring we preserve the rights that so many people before us have worked to achieve.

Educating for Democratic Citizenship

The Shanker Institute in partnership with the American Federation of Teachers, Share My Lesson the and the AFT Innovation Fund has launched this Educating for Democratic Citizenship Project whereby a group of accomplished, experienced AFT educators have developed these Action Civics lessons and materials that we hope will improve teaching and learning of American History, Government, and Civics for teachers and students.
