Overview: Students will learn about a variety of weather instruments and also will be given materials to design and build a working anemometer.

Driving Question: How do meteorologists’ tools help them predict the weather?

Learning Targets:

  • Students will be able to identify and define specific instruments (thermometer, hygrometer, barometer, wind vane, weather balloon, rain gauge, and anemometer).
  • Students will understand what each instrument measures, how it works and how that data is used to help predict the weather.

These lessons are so interactive! The use of the "I have, who has " type game is engaging! The availability of lessons for designing and making models of weather tools is on the mark for NGSS. The enrich section can be used for middle grades use too!
