This holiday is a time to express affection for another person with cards, candy, flowers and other symbols of love. To celebrate this holiday the U.S. Census Bureau shares facts and figures associated with this romantic time of year. The Day of Love – A History
• In A.D. 496, Pope Gelasius I declared February 14 as Valentine’s Day.
• Esther Howland of Massachusetts is given credit for selling the first mass-produced Valentine’s Day cards in the 1840s.
